When you consider Boardwalk revolves around organized crime in the great state of New Jersey, it was only natural that it was compared to The Sopranos from the jump. That season’s finale saw 3.3 million tune in, a number that fell to 2.9 million when the second premiered (for context, the last season of The Sopranos boasted an average of eight million viewers per episode). However, it didn’t manage to keep its audience engaged after a premiere that drew five million people before its ratings began to decline at a steady pace. It’s worth noting it wasn’t a complete bomb from a critical standpoint, as It was nominated for 57 Emmys (winning 20 of them) and took home the Golden Globe for Best Drama in 2011. It may not have been a complete dud like John From Cincinnati but Boardwalk Empire’s failure to really grab hold of the zeitgeist and garner both consistent critical and general praise was fairly surprising when you consider it was seemingly destined to become The Next Big Thing. ![]() Ok, rant over.HBO had missed before, so it’s not as if the network was batting a thousand. She infuriated me at times but she really had no chance. But I love him and I’m sure most people here empathize with him. I actually stalled this time in the middle of season 2 because I really love Jimmy and his arc is so tragic imo, and it gets harder and harder for me to watch.Īnother case in point about people not being all black and white: Richard is my favorite character and most Boardwalk fans love him. I’ve watched the first 2 seasons countless times and I started another rewatch about 6 months ago. Yes, I realize these are “just” TV shows but it’s a great reminder.Īpologies for the huge wall of text! I really love this show. After years of de-conditioning I’m realizing more and more that that’s just not true. I grew up in a strict religious environment and was taught from a young age that people are good or bad. They are all great character studies (especially Mad Men!). That’s what I appreciate most about my 3 favorite TV shows that I watch over and over again: this, Mad Men and Deadwood. I think ultimately it shows that people in general are not all black or all white. Considering that she let out all her rage on him when he was completely defenseless right after the stroke, yet he still tried to protect her, shows that he wasn’t completely evil, although I may be totally reaching here because I’m just reminded that he’s an effing pedophile so he’s still a garbage human being overall (forgive my stream of consciousness rant, I might be a tad drunk right now). He was a horrible person and is ultimately responsible imo for how Gillian turned out, but I do think he genuinely cared about her in a way. I’ve always thought it gave him just a smidge of redemption. We will joyfully swing the banhammer for such behavior.Įxample (#s "They drink beer!") No degradation or harassment of other users.
